Developing appropriate and meaningful social skills
School-based recreation therapy encompasses a whole person approach addressing needs
physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The Recreation Therapist serves as part of the student’s team and assesses these areas to develop specific measurable goals and objectives that bring about positive outcomes and achieve success in the school setting.
They also provide support in areas of social skills development, coping skills identification and implementation, focus and attention span, as well as developing physical skills and abilities. Recreation Therapists provide creative and engaging activity-based interventions to assist in goal achievement.
Enrichment through Specialized Day Programs
Day programs are vendored by the Regional Center and provide quality programming for adults with intellectual disabilities that have aged out of the school system. The role of the Recreation Therapy Consultant is to provide leisure programming that aids in individuals reaching their maximum potential – and to have fun while doing it!
Programming works on developing and helping several vital skills:
◆ the ability to interact appropriately with peers
◆ gross and fine motor skills
◆ community integration skills
◆ behavior management skills
◆ social and recreational skills
